Astronomy? Why do European astronomers have a base in Chile, South America?

Astronomers like to build telescopes really high up in altitude because there is less distorting atmosphere between the telescope and space and also that it will be above cloud level so that every observing night won't be blocked by clouds. The Andes mountains in Chile are perfect for this, and besides Chile welcomes the European currency the astronomers bring with them.
